Controversy Surrounding Jennifer Lopez’s Super Bowl Outfit Sparks Debate Over Use of Animal Feathers

Peta raised concerns about the outfit, but Versace stated that it was produced in a manner that aligns with ethical practices. Jennifer Lopez was part of the dynamic duo that headlined the 2020 Super Bowl, showcasing a fusion of Latin culture alongside Shakira. Together, they embraced and celebrated diversity during their performance.

Nevertheless, a particular outfit donned by J-Lo sparked some debate on social media. She was seen sporting a unique coat with a combination of red, white, and blue colors. One side of the coat displayed the American flag, while the other displayed the flag of Puerto Rico, her family’s native land. Even though J-Lo was born in New York, she is of Puerto Rican descent.

Peta, an organization advocating for animal rights, strongly criticized the artwork for using real feathers. In a social media post on Instagram and Twitter, they claimed that dozens of birds were harmed in the creation of the piece.

Mariel Haenn, a stylist for the singer, revealed that the coat was personally designed by Versace and adorned with 40,000 feathers in shades of red, blue, and white, each meticulously hand-sewn onto the garment. Following this reveal, animal activists voiced their concerns on social media platforms.

“Honestly, so unnecessary,” remarked one person. “Such a shame,” chimed in another individual. In response to the backlash, Versace took to Instagram to defend itself: “All feathers used in the design are ethically sourced,” the brand posted.
